Not All Boot Camp Teens Deserve to be There
Boot Camp Teens are teenagers who have issues. These rebellious or out of control teens are placed in boot camps in the hopes of transforming them into responsible and confident individuals.
Teens enrolled in such programs learn discipline through rigid military-style drills and exercises. These intensive physical and mental trainings usually take place in camps located in tough places that are called boot camps.
Staff with military ranks or martial arts backgrounds work with these teenagers and give them loads of tough love. Some of these boot camps are even used as substitutes for juvenile jail by certain States. That’s how tough these camps are.
But are all boot camp teens out of control youths who defy authority? Do they all have criminal tendencies?
Parents must be careful when considering putting their difficult teen in such camps. There is no question as to the effectivity of boot camps in transforming wayward youths. However, the question is more of whether or not it is the appropriate intervention that best addresses your child’s needs.
If you are just dealing with laziness, disrespect, or a little rebellion from your teenager, then perhaps boot camp would seem like an overkill. You do not need such an extreme wake up call for your problem teenager.
Boot camps are more suited to handling teens who are in trouble with the law or have alcohol or drug habits, and violent tendencies. Serious misbehavior can be dealt with by boot camps.
Mixing your child with such violent and wayward teens in the hopes of curing them only of lethargy for example, can backfire. Your child may even resent you for it.
What parents must do first is find out what is really wrong with their troubled teens. Punishment, it must be remembered, does not always have positive results. It might even have the opposite effect.
If you started out with a normal problem and gave it an extraordinary form of solution, you might end up with an extraordinary problem. Matching the solution to the problem is very important. Once you get an idea of your teen’s problem, try matching it with the appropriate solution.
If you consider boot camp, check out what they offer, what their program and activities are. Find out what their goals are and how they plan to achieve them.
Ask also the parents of former boot camp teens. They are actually a rich source of useful information for you to help influence your decision.
However, if you feel your teen’s issues can be addressed more successfully by behavioral therapy rather than by push ups or other forms of physical punishment, then by all means, go for it. The important thing is not to jump into an extreme form of rehabilitation right away.
Having the skills to deal with difficult teens can be an advantage as you can save on therapist fees and you can do it at the comfort of your own home.
